It seems that you cannot go far these days without reading somewhere about DNA testing. Is it just the “in” thing to do? “So-and-so” has had their DNA tested, so I must too!

You could not be more wrong

DNA tests do have a purpose in life. They may not be appropriate for everyone - certainly do not rush out and get one without having a very specific reason to do so, but should you need to get one done, the process is now relatively simple.

There is a large range of DNA tests available on the international market these days. (Any reputable testing company, such as Test Country, will be able to advise you which ones are required.) These tests can be fairly common ones which you often read about in reports on court cases, such as paternity and maternity tests. Normally these are used to determine who is or who may be related to whom, or even to determine who is not related to whom! But there are many other types of tests available. These include testing for possible susceptibility to certain diseases or impairments, genealogy testing and ancestry testing.

Animals can be tested to determine or confirm their pedigree.

It is now even possible to create works of art from DNA. As the DNA of each individual is unique, so the resulting work of art will also be unique.

Possibly the biggest advance in recent years is that it is now possible for a lot of the test samples to be taken in the privacy of your own home without having to travel to a laboratory to provide the samples. Of course, there are still specific occasions when, due to such things as legal requirements, the samples have to be obtained under strict supervision and control. But regardless of how and where you test your DNA, ensure that the testing is done by an accredited laboratory.
