How much do labratory DNA tests to verify paternity cost?
My acquaintance questions the paternity of his 7 month old son. The child's mother has passed away. He heard that the test costs thousands. That does not sound right to me. He does not want to use an over the counter kit. What is the real approximate cost and are there any agencies that do this for free for people who are indigent?

the cost varies from a couple of hunderd dollars, like $200 to the thousands depending on the complexity of the case. in ur case it sounds pretty complicated since the child’s mother has unfortunately passed away. i suggest he contact some DNA labs, a lawyer or the court systems to get help. some places normally dont need a sample from the mother but a lot of them do to make sure their is no error in the results or to make sure the child was indeed that of the woman in question. the childs maternal grandparents can be tested on the deceased woman’s behalf.
Around 100. Look on line they will actually send you the test kit and you can do it yourself and mail it back.

The only way I know of to get a free paternity test is to go on a talk show, which I am sure you do not want to do. However, they do not cost thousands of dollars!
Do an internet search (I like Google) for paternity tests. There are numerous companies that offer them, and I believe the cost is as low as several hundred dollars (for ones where the sample is collected by medical personnel, and is legally binding).
I was not even aware there are over the counter kits available, but I do know that you can mail in the samples (strand of hair, buccal (cheek) swab, etc) and get the results back. Often these are the same companies that provide the other type of tests, and results are just as reliable.
