I’ve been there and it took 15 years to find my daughter and fight for custody.
First, write down everything. All the names (everyone – family and friends) and dates. If you do it on the computer, make sure you print a copy and store it.
Second – Check into your states ‘putative father registry’. Be careful of the registries as they often protect adoptive parents.
Third – Consider a lawyer if you can afford one because the laws can get complex. Also, consider an investigator. I had an investigator that only cost $300.
Keep track of all that you spend on this. In some states you can sue for the costs.
If you cannot hire a lawyer; contact the clerk of court and ask about legal aid and if they have forms that you can fill out and file. It is very important to start a ‘paper trail’ for this to prove you are attempting to do this the proper legal way.
Call a family attorney. If they’re not the right person for you, they will probably be able recommend someone who is.
