Paternity Test and Birth Certificate…?
I never had a child so I have no idea how this works. My Ex is almost 6 months pregnant. I read everywhere that it is best to have paternity test after baby is born. My question is, how soon is birth certificate given after birth? Do they give you enough time to have paternity test done before my name is put on certificate? I am in NY if it matters.

my son’s birth certificate form was filled out before I left the hospital. i don’t remember how long it was till i recieved official birth certificate in mail.
They can do the test as soon as the baby is born and yes they will wait until you are sure the baby is yours Good Luck good on you for takin care of your business
A paternity test can be given at birth. One can delay actually having the birth certificate completed until after the test results are complete.
No. Your birth certificate will be written before your baby goes home from the hospital. Each state has different requirements for when a blood test is to be issued, some not until it is required by a court. Talk to the hospital or doctor about your individual needs.
Good luck, which ever way you are leaning. It must be a very stressful time for you.
usually they had the birth certificate application to the mother and she has a certain amount of time to mail it in. I would put my name on the certificate until you have had the paternity test. Once it’s established them sign it and ask the mom to mail it in.
The birth certificate application will be given to the mother in the hospital after delivery. You do NOT have to sign the birth certificate UNTIL you find out paternity and do not let anyone tell you different. Do NOT sign unless your sure the baby is yours.
Hell no! THe birth certificate is brought in same day or next day or before leaving the hospital. If you’re in doubt then get a test first, and go to court. If you are pretty sure its yours then sign it and dont waste the money! Its not cheap! My ex boyfriend did this to me we broke up when I was 3 months after we had been together for 5 years I had nevr cheated and he signed my twins birth certificates then a year later we went to court and he ordered a paternity test. How weird well good luck son!
The woman will sign the birth certificate before she leaves the hospital. You should call your hospital and ask if they have time for the test first.
They give you the paperwork in the hospital to fill out. If you are not sure weather or not the child is yours you do not have to sign the birth certificate right away. I think you have up to a year to sign it.
i have heard that the birth ccertificate is given to you when you leave the hospital after the baby is born so that wouldn’t allow enough time for a paternity test. Do you think the baby is not yours for some reason and have a good enough reason for wanting a paternity test?
I live in canada and here we have to wait almost 18months before we can even apply for a birth certificate, we don’t even get anything for proof of birth.
Most birth certificates are issued at the hospital. To do a proper paternity test, you have to wait a while (i think my son’s was 6 months) because otherwise it can be scewed. If you truely do not know whether this is your kid or not, DON’T SIGN the birth certificate. In a few of the states, that is stating that you are the father. I have a friend who is paying child support on a child that is not his (has the DNA test to prove it) because he signed the birth certificate. He has to find the true father and get him to take a paternity test before they will let my friend off the hook.
Paternity tests are expensive, but if she is on state assistance, sometimes they will help with the costs.
As far as adding your name, you can add it whenever (up to a year) or up to 90 days after the confirmation letter for the paternity test. (no statute of limit. on that one)
By the second day in the hospital after the baby is born the parents are asked to sign the birth certificate. Since you are not married(i’m assuming) you will have to make sure that you sign it or your name will not be on the birth certificate. It’s your duty to let the Social worker know that you would like to have a paternity test done before you sign the birth certificate. Then your name will not be on there. After you take the test and you choose to have your name on the bc you can contact the ss office in your state and have your name added and given to the child. Also, it’s none of my business, but if you are worried about it being your baby, thing something is wrong with your relationship and maybe you should work that out before the baby is born.
A birth certificate is given to the mother hours after birth. You can be named as the father on the birth certificate but you still have the right to request a paternity test after birth.. Just know that you will be the one footing the bill for this test. And if the child is yours, get ready to do some heavy apologizing… lmao…. Good luck Daddy
The birth certificate is usually done within 72 hours of birth but no more than 1 week. Unfortunately they do not give you time for a paternity test before the certificate is done. If you and your ex are not married, she cannot legally put your name on the birth certificate as you have to sign your name acknowledging that you are the father. So what you can do is refuse to sign the BC pending the results and once you receive the results, if the child is yours, the cert. can always be amended. Good luck to you.
I don’t think so but once the test is done you can be added my daughters father was added by signing a form called acknowledgment of paternity then i got a copy he was signed up for child support right then in there and i sent off for one with that paper attached and his name came back hope this helps (live in KY and the paper stated he didn’t want a test he knew he was the father)
in Tucson AZ you can cheeply under $200 have this done in about 48hours with the mother, father and baby if it is just father and baby it cost hundreds more. Im sure the hospital offers such a service and birth records can be changed after the fact. it is done all the time when parents are unsure of a baby name
You have up to 5 years in most states, to put the fathers name on a birth certificate. Most states allow the mother to state whatever name will go there, with little or no proof. You might want to talk to a legal person to ensure that you get that test on the baby. What does your ex say? Get her to put it into writing.
They will not put your name on the Birth Certificate unless u sign a document at the time of the babys birth taking full responsibilty and paternity of the child untill he/she is 18, financially etc and you are %100 percent sure you are the father.
If you are not present or do not choose to sign, your name will not be listed on the Birth Certificate. A hospital rep will explain too u, if you sign, the baby is yours forever (financially), even if it wasn’t yours.
FYI That doesn’t mean there won’t be child support involved if you are the father tho.
It looks like you can wait until after the child is born, take the test, and if your the father have the birth certificate amended. I would contact a lawyer. Check out the link provided.
P.S. DON’T SIGN ANYTHING WITHOUT HAVING A LAWYER READ IT!!
You have to wait until the baby is born to do a paternity test. The birth certificate is not given at the hospital, but the info that goes on it is. If you’re not sure that it is your baby, wait before you let your personal info go on anything. I’m not exactly sure how your name can be added, but I’m sure it can be after the paternity test. Just don’t make yourself financially responsible before you know for sure. Contact the Dept. that would keep those records(it could be city or county).
When I had my son I filled out the papers for his birth certificate in the hospital right after he was born. I think they can change it though, i’m not completely sure.
